Targeting Assistant

Targeting Assistant

United States remote-text

Equis is a set of organizations (including Equis Research, Equis Institute, and EquisLabs) working to create a better understanding of Latinos, innovate new approaches to reach and engage them, and invest in the leadership and infrastructure for long-term change and increased engagement.

At Equis Research we lean into the complexities of Latino voters in the United States, ensuring they get the sophistication of treatment and level of attention that matches their critical role in the electorate. We act as a public utility, using a diversity of tools (polling, qualitative insights, digital testing, voter data, and analytics, along with best practices from other sectors) to shape the decisions of the political and policy ecosystem. People who are invisible in the data are invisible to campaigns and decision-makers; we aim to make them visible and shift from a paradigm of neglect to one of engagement. Some of our previous public analysis is available here and here.

Equis is seeking a Targeting Assistant to support a portfolio of voter, polling, and other data projects that aim to deepen our understanding of Latino communities and improve the targeting of potential Latino voters by campaigns.

  • Data Ingestion: Develop plans, build structures, and design repeatable workflows and protocols for ongoing data collection and processing, in a comprehensive and well-documented way.
  • Data Management: Clean, combine, merge, and maintain data sets of all sizes and types. Assist with data projects and planning, including helping to develop consistently and methodologically sound best practices and systems. Collaborate with others to make datasets more understandable and easily accessible to non-technical members of the team.
  • Collaborate: Work with the rest of the Targeting and Research Teams to better understand Latino voters and nonvoters, manage poll and survey data, and think of new and better ways to identify and think about potential Latino voters.
  • Partnerships: Help advise trusted partners on how best to find and reach Latinos, the best modes and methods of communication, and the strengths and limitations of of the targeting tools at our disposal.

  • The ability to be nimble: to switch between different projects, and different types of data, and come up with creative solutions to complex data issues.
  • Unending curiosity, a love of solving puzzles, and a knack for tweaking methods to get better outcomes.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets
  • Experience working with voter files is critical (though work with fundraising, demographic, or media datasets of high complexity could be considered)
  • Experience working on digital campaigns or with digital datasets is a plus
  • Familiarity with VAN (voter database) is useful but not required.
  • Experience with one or more of the following is a plus: R, SQL, Python, Stata, R, or data visualization.
  • Please include the word “Fuzzy” somewhere in your cover letter.

While experience working with data on Latinos, specifically, is not necessary, our ideal candidate will have cultural fluency and a demonstrated awareness of racial and ethnic bias in data collection and analysis.
